The Maldives have been the location for many television and big screen film productions. Producers of documentaries also find the archipelago the ideal location to highlight the vibrancy and huge variety of underwater life. Reality TV crews have taken over parts of the island chain and part of the latest Star Wars anthology was shot in the Maldives.
A more spectacular place on earth is hard to find – a majestic combination of sun-kissed beaches, coral reefs and tropical vegetation all surrounded by the sparkling water of the Indian ocean. Whether you are an amateur or professional, the beauty of the Maldives lends itself to sublime photography and film. You will not be disappointed and the images you take home with you will last a lifetime.
If you are interested in a commercial film shoot in the Maldives you will need a permit. The permit is available from the National Centre for the Arts, which are responsible for issuing permits for both feature and short films produced in the Maldives by Maldivians as well as foreign films and photo shoots. The National Centre for the Arts will need to know the exact location and dates on which the filming will take place. If found to be filming outside the area or dates declared on the permit, the film crew risks being deported. The permits are relatively quick and easy to process.
As far as when to film in the Maldives, it’s warm throughout the year, but the driest months are from December to April. For underwater film, the months that lie between seasons are the best i.e. April and November. Underwater visibility is best during these months, giving you a chance to most effectively capture the diversity of some of the 2000 varieties of marine life that make these waters their home. The world beneath the water is one that will leave a lasting impact on both you and the viewers of your production.
If it is a surfing film shoot you are after, visit the Maldives during the more windy months of the year ie. June to August – that’s when the best surf is to be had.
The Maldives has limited options for equipment hire, so it is best to bring your equipment, key crew and talent. Transport will usually be by speedboat or sea plane, depending on your needs. There are many uninhabited islands so there are plenty of opportunities to film in peace and quiet, with no interruptions. Some of the best film is shot from the air, where you can get a birds eye view of the lay out and sheer beauty of the island chain.
The Maldives lends itself to a successful film shoot – how can it not, when there is so much beauty before you. It’s the ideal location for your next project, and with plenty of options for accommodation, it has the making of a memorable working vacation.
