Both professional and amateur photographers alike will love an opportunity to take a ride on a seaplane, to see & shoot some of the world’s most picturesque islands from the air. The Maldives is made up of 26 atolls spread over 90 000 square kilometres, making seaplanes the ideal form of transport between islands. Flying by seaplane gives you a spectacular birds-eye view of the archipelago. There’s no better way to admire the coral reefs, marvel at the formation of the atolls, appreciate the layout of the many resorts and simply soak in the magnificence of the ocean lapping against pristine beaches.
The Trans Maldivian Airways have the largest fleet of seaplanes in the world and operate out of Male International airport where they have three terminal buildings. The options for seaplane flights are twofold.
Photo Flight
You can inquire at your resort if a private seaplane flight can be arranged. With this option, the seaplane will collect you from the resort for a 15 – 30 min sightseeing excursion over the archipelago. (Longer trips can be arranged). This is an opportunity for you to enjoy & photograph the jaw-dropping scenery with family and friends. The private photo flights can be a fabulous celebration of enjoying all that the Maldives have to offer. Not only are you able to get a wide range of air shots, if you arrange it beforehand, you can plan to land off one of the islands and enjoy a picnic on the beach and make an unforgettable memory.
There are a few points you need to be aware of when taking a flight in these unusual planes. To start with they are unpressurized. This means that there is no air-conditioning. It may become quite hot and stuffy while waiting for take-off, so dress in light cool clothing. The planes seat 15 and, when full, it is quite snug. However, with the small interior you are always going to be close to a window where you can get the photos you are after. Another point you need to be aware of is the noise factor. You may want to invest in a pair of earplugs and take them with you, just in case the noise becomes an issue.
This unique experience will stay with you for decades to come. It’s absolutely worth taking a seaplane photo flight when you visit the Maldives.
